Tinkering is a learning approach of STEM education at the crossroads of constructivism (Piaget) and the maker culture. Using familiar material and less familiar equipment participants are invited to create machines that meet a challenge through an iterative process and cooperation with others.

Tinkering was formalised by the Tinkering Studio of the Exploratorium in San Francisco and is now a global practice.
